A new study suggests that finasteride may be safe for people who have high levels of the hormone dihydrotestosterone (DHT) and prostate cancer. This finding is important because it suggests that finasteride may be a more effective treatment for DHT than finasteride alone.
Researchers at the University of California, Los Angeles have previously suggested that finasteride may be safe for some people with prostate cancer or high levels of DHT.
The new findings were published in the Journal of the American Medical Association. A total of 241 men were randomly assigned to receive either finasteride (Propecia®) or placebo (usual care). The patients were assessed by the American Urological Association (AUA) and the International Prostate Cancer Study Group (IPSS).
Finasteride was given to the patients and it was measured at baseline and at the end of the study. Patients who had high levels of DHT had a 5-year risk of prostate cancer.
When they stopped taking the drug, the researchers found that finasteride had a small overall risk of prostate cancer, although there was a small absolute risk of prostate cancer. They also reported that the risk of prostate cancer increased with longer duration of use.
They also found that the overall prostate cancer risk was similar to that of the placebo group. But there was no difference in the risk of prostate cancer between the finasteride and placebo groups.
